-kAIROS-
Kairos: The term kairos, adopted from ancient Greek, entails the "opportunity"
and "right time" to discuss an argument, as well as why it is important today
(its exigency).
The kairos found in the film is defined by Psihoyos very explicitly. Several times during the film, the fact that thousands of dolphins are slaughtered every fall in Taji is brought up. Psihoyos also emphasizes how, in his thirty five plus years of diving and continuously visiting the same spots, visible evidence of ocean degradation is seen abundantly. The film could not have been produced at a better time. It is noted by one of the OPS activists in the film that by the year 2100, fifty percent of all the world's species may become extinct. If no one chooses to address the issue at hand, the world's ecosystems will continue to fade away at ever increasing rates. The Cove put forth its argument in a time of ecological nightmare, so that the future of earth's ecodiversity and sustainability can be maintained if not strengthened.
